A Mahj Moment evolved from a single table into a mahjong community bringing the Bay Area together, wherever they gather.

We started as a small group who fell for this game fast — fast-paced, sharp, and surprisingly social. Somewhere between your first tile and your last discard, you look up and realize you've made a friend, or deepened a friendship you already had. That feeling is what we wanted to share.

One lesson is genuinely enough to start playing — we mean that. But mahjong rewards you the longer you stay with it, whether this is your first week or your fifteenth year. New players get a real foundation, fast. Experienced players get sharper strategy, deeper mastery of the rules and real competition against players outside their usual circle. We built this for the mahjong curious and the mahjong serious alike — and for everyone who moves between the two.

Mahjong is believed to have taken shape in China during the Qing Dynasty, born from earlier card and tile games and quickly beloved across social classes. As it spread — to Japan, Korea, Vietnam, the Philippines, and eventually the U.S. in the 1920s — each culture made it their own, adapting rules and rituals while keeping its essence intact. Every hand we teach carries that lineage, and every table we set is a small continuation of a very old tradition: people, gathered, playing together.
